As a runner for the past three and a half years, I have tried and tested a lot of running shoes for the road. I have always had a passion for Nike shoes, and this year, being a part of the Alpine Run Project, I got to explore the world of trail shoes. The project was supported by Nike and JD Sports, which was a perfect opportunity for me to test even more shoes.
When researching the history of Nike trail shoes, I was surprised to learn that Nike's involvement in trail running dates back to 1978 when they provided their newest running shoes, the Nike LDV, to the American expedition that reached the top of K2 unassisted by oxygen. Since then, Nike has come a long way and now offers a range of popular trail running shoes, including the Nike Ultrafly Trail Zoom X, Nike React Terra Kiger 9, Nike Zoom Terra Wildhorse 8, Nike X Zegma Trail, and the Pegasus 36 Trail.
During the YCC revenge in Chamonix, which was a short 5k trail race with a lot of elevation, I wore the Nike Ultrafly Trail Zoom X. These shoes have a carbon plate in them, making them a great option for training or shorter races due to the stack height and less protection.
My favourite shoe is the Nike React Terra Kiger 9. I found them to be very versatile and wore them in the Salomon Sky Series 27k in Scotland in very wet, boggy conditions with slippery rock descents and in the UTMB Nice 20k trail race, with warm, dry conditions with a mix of trail cobbles and road.
The Nike X Zegma Trail is a great race shoe with some excellent colourways and details that I prefer to wear for fashion. I think some of the colourways are too fresh to run in!
Even colleagues and friends of mine who are not into sports or trail running are huge fans of Nike Trail shoes and apparel. Overall, I have been very happy with the trail shoes Nike offers for all distances and terrains. These shoes have helped my performance, and I have seen some of my fellow competitors struggling with grip.
I have also recently learned that Nike customization service is available for the Nike Pegasus Trail 4 By You range. You can customize your trail shoes in various colour schemes and add text. I love this idea!
I am looking forward to the release of the Nike Zegama 2 and Nike Pegasus Trail 5, which will hit the market in May 2024. These shoes promise to be even better than their predecessors, and I can't wait to try them out on the trails.
Best, David.
