Stepping off the train in Birmingham, excitement washed over me. This was my first time in the city, and it was for a momentous reason—the launch of Year 2 of the Alpine Run Project, delivered by YBB (Youth Beyond Borders). Last year's launch was in London, a more familiar place. This felt like a new journey on top of an already amazing adventure.
Making my way to The Compound, I was struck by the city's energy. The venue added to that buzz—a creative studio space with incredible artwork on the walls, including some Banksy pieces that captured my attention.
The energy inside was infectious! I caught up with some familiar faces from last year and met a new crew of young people about to embark on this life-changing program. Seeing the excitement in their eyes reminded me of my journey starting a year ago.
Nike and Strava really outdid themselves with their workshops. It was awesome to get insider knowledge about trail running gear and the tech designed for it. Plus, I'm ready to put it into practice as I train for the year ahead. JD Sports, another key project partner, was also there, showcasing some great running gear.
Of course, hearing John McAvoy speak about the program's vision was the highlight. His story always resonates, proving that with determination, you can achieve great things, regardless of your background. Knowing that twenty young people from this year's group will also experience the magic of Chamonix was extra special. I'll never forget how that trip transformed my perspective.
Chatting with the new participants and sharing some of my journey felt amazing. Birmingham, the venue, and meeting new people made me realise how far I've come since joining the Alpine Run Project. This wasn't just a launch event but a celebration of change, a reminder of what's possible.
Leaving Birmingham, I felt an overwhelming sense of purpose. The Alpine Run Project gave me a lifeline when needed, a chance to connect with a passion like trail running. I'm beyond excited to not only continue as a runner but to be a mentor for Year 2 of this incredible project.
Special thanks to James Mitchell, the official photographer, for perfectly capturing the day's vibe and mood. The images in this blog are a credit to his talent.
Best, David.
